HARRISBURG– To help kick off celebrations in central Pennsylvania for America250PA, America250PA Commissioner Senator Greg Rothman (R-34) and Senator Patty Kim (D-15) were presented with an American Flag from the National Flag Foundation as part of their Sojourn 250 initiative.

“This flag is a powerful reminder of our nation’s history—and its future,” Rothman said. “Its colors symbolize the values upon which our country was founded—and those that keep us free: red for valor, blue for perseverance and justice, and white for purity in our ideals. I’m eternally grateful for the bravery, vision, boldness and determination of our founders and our service members who put their lives on the line for our freedom. We must never take that freedom for granted.”

The American flag was presented by 13 American Legion motorcycle riders who started their sunrise journey from Pittsburgh and rode across the commonwealth to the State Capitol. Before descending upon Harrisburg, the flag traveled throughout the commonwealth’s 67 counties to make its final stop and be flown above the State Capitol Building on July 6th.

“It is a tremendous honor to participate in America250PA events and celebrations at every opportunity,” said Senator Patty Kim. “The Semiquincentennial Flag Sojourn has brought together every U.S. state and territory as a symbol of genuine unity. To receive the flag here at our State Capitol is a great privilege and a truly humbling moment for me, both as a leader and as an American.”

As part of the activities in Pennsylvania, the National Flag Foundation along with members of the American Legion transported a sole American flag throughout all 50 states and America’s 26 military cemeteries located in 10 countries.

“The National Flag Foundation proudly helps celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial,” said Romel Nicholas, Chairman of the National Flag Foundation. “Both Sojourn 250, as well as Light to Unite are efforts designed to provide common ground for our Nation.”

The National Flag Foundation has the Light to Unite initiative which is also part of the America250PA events. The goal is to light up as many buildings across the United States in the colors red, white, and blue on the night of July 4th. Pennsylvania’s State Capitol will be lit from July 2nd to July 5th honoring America’s 250th birthday and to honor the pivotal role that Pennsylvania played in the founding of our nation.

“When the Sojourn 250 flag flies above the State Capitol, it will serve as a symbol of the heritage, hopes, and enduring values that unite our Commonwealth,” said Cassandra Coleman, Executive Director of America250PA. “We’re grateful to the National Flag Foundation and the American Legion riders for undertaking this inspiring journey, and to America250PA Commissioner Senator Greg Rothman and Senator Patty Kim for hosting the flag’s ceremonial reception in Harrisburg.”

About America250PA

The Pennsylvania Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial (America250PA) was established by the General Assembly and Governor in 2018 to plan, encourage, develop and coordinate the commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States, Pennsylvania’s integral role in that event, and the impact of its people on the nation’s past, present, and future. The Commission is made up of current and past Pennsylvania leaders, celebrating the rich history and diversity of the state.

That shared history gives us context, pride, and perspective. America250PA is partnering with communities in all 67 counties so every Pennsylvanian can take part in this once-in-a-lifetime milestone and help shape what 2026 looks like across the Commonwealth. Our work is guided by four themes: Educate, Preserve, Innovate, and Celebrate.
