HARRISBURG – A resolution sponsored by Sens. Devlin Robinson (R-37) and Greg Rothman (R-34) preparing for the 250th anniversaries of the United States Marine Corps and Navy was approved unanimously today by the Senate’s Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
Senate Resolution 82 urges the secretary of the Navy to designate Philadelphia and portions of the Delaware River as the site of the main celebration of the 250th birthdays of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps in October and November of 2025.
“As a Marine veteran, I am thrilled to help in the planning of this special anniversary. The history of both branches can be traced back to Philadelphia, so it is only appropriate that they be celebrated there,” Robinson said. “Designating the birthplace of the two branches will be a significant first step in the joyful planning of the celebrations.”
On Oct. 13, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to procure two armed vessels in anticipation of conflict with the British Empire, establishing the United States Navy.
The Continental Marines was established by the Second Continental Congress on Nov. 10, 1775, to enhance naval forces in the Revolutionary War and conduct ship-to-ship fighting. Tun Tavern on Water St. in Philadelphia is considered the birthplace of the Marines.
“Our commonwealth served as the birthplace of the Marine Corps and Navy and still upholds their rich tradition today,” Rothman said. “As a Pennsylvanian and a Marine, I am honored to take part in celebrating the anniversary and bringing attention to Pennsylvania’s important role in our nation’s military history.”
The resolution now heads to the Senate for consideration.
