A Special Thanks to All Veterans

We set aside Veterans Day to acknowledge and celebrate all who have served and sacrificed to defend the freedoms we hold dear. Those who have answered the call to serve in our armed forces deserve our deepest gratitude.

Our area is blessed to be home to many who have worn our nation’s uniform and many who are still serving. Their leadership, experiences, and character help to shape our community. We live and work among heroes! I hope we can all find ways to thank them for their selflessness this week and throughout the year.

I look forward to honoring all who have served this Saturday, at our Annual Veterans Appreciation Breakfast.

Senate Acts to Expand Access to Midwife Maternal Care

The Senate approved legislation to strengthen maternal health care in Pennsylvania by expanding access to midwife services.

Senate Bill 507 would modernize licensure requirements for certified midwives, improve collaboration between midwives and physicians and update prescription authority – particularly for the treatment of substance use disorders.

Midwives provide care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, as well as newborn care during the first 28 days of life. Many also offer routine reproductive health services, including prenatal care, clinical exams, screenings and patient education. The bill was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Measure to Alleviate Corrections Officer Shortage Passed by Senate

The Senate approved legislation targeting the staffing crisis facing the state’s correctional institutions.

Senate Bill 111, supported by the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, would expand the pool of qualified candidates to help fill critical vacancies in Pennsylvania’s correctional facilities.

Corrections officers across the commonwealth have faced unprecedented challenges in recent years – including mandatory overtime, increased stress and a rise in violent incidents – that have strained morale and operations. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Resources Available for Caregivers

November is National Family Caregivers Month. Although all caregivers should be celebrated every day, this month is designated to recognize, honor, and increase support for family members who work tirelessly to provide hands-on care for a loved one.

Families are often the primary source of support for older adults and people with disabilities. In most cases, their efforts allow their loved ones to remain at home, which has tremendous benefits.

Resources for caregivers are available here.  They include information for optimizing the care provided as well as provide connections to support groups, temporary respite care providers, and tips for self-care.

This month and always, we acknowledge the dedication, compassion, and tremendous importance of the work done by family caregivers. We owe them a debt of gratitude.

Watch Out for Increased Deer Activity on Roads

The number of deer-related crashes in Pennsylvania has been on the rise since 2020, with last year’s total of 6,426 setting a five-year high, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

Autumn means increased deer activity on roads. Deer become more active at dawn and dusk, and if you see one, there are usually more.

PennDOT advises motorists involved in a deer-related crash to assess the situation to determine whether they need to contact local authorities. Pennsylvanians can report a dead deer for removal from state-maintained roads by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD or submitting feedback through the PennDOT Customer Care Center.

Happy 250th Birthday to the Marine Corps

The Marine Corps traces its roots back to November 10, 1775, in Philadelphia, with the founding of the Continental Marines by the Second Continental Congress.  Early Marines played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War, including their amphibious assault on the Bahamas in March 1776 and in every conflict since, from the War of 1812 to Operation Enduring Freedom.

I treasure the years I spent in a Marine uniform.  I remain grateful for the men and women with whom I served and the way that service shaped my life.

While some official festivities have already taken place, I know my fellow Marines will keep the celebrations going through Monday!  Happy 250th Birthday, Marine Corps!  Semper Fidelis!

Around the District

I was glad to participate in the ribbon cutting at Cumberland County’s new Costco this week. The excitement from our community was undeniable, as residents were lined up before 6:30 a.m. to be the first ones in. Of course, Rep. Thomas Kutz and I had to grab a legendary Kirkland hotdog for breakfast!

While visiting the Cumberland County courthouse, I picked up my 2025-2026 hunting license from the Treasurer’s Office.  Thanks to Kaytee Isley and staff for providing this service.  If you haven’t already purchased your license, get yours soon, either online or in person!
