Cumberland Perry Area Career & Technical Center Breaks Ground on Expansion

The future of Career and Technical Education is bright! That’s especially true for the Cumberland Perry Area CTC, its students, and graduates! This week’s groundbreaking for the CTC’s much-needed expansion was exciting, as the project will allow the center to meet the sustained, increasing demand for existing programs as well as add new program offerings.

Collaboration at all levels was key in advancing this major expansion. I was glad to help secure commonwealth funding for the project, which will increase capacity in the welding and automotive technology programs, add a classroom to the culinary arts program, modernize the logistics/warehouse management program, increase space for the criminal justice program, and more. It will also allow for the addition of four new programs: pre-engineering, building/property maintenance, emergency management/homeland security, and service occupation.

Students coming from all 13 school districts served by the CTC will directly benefit from this investment. These programs not only prepare graduates for a wide-variety of good paying, in-demand jobs, they contribute to our local economy and make our communities better.

Save the Date: Veterans Appreciation Breakfast

Veterans and their spouses are invited to attend a free breakfast on Saturday, November 8 in Carlisle.  Reservations will be required.  Please mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details, which are coming soon.  We look forward to seeing you and honoring all who have served!

Hampden Twp. Begins Construction of New Park

Work on Hampden Township‘s Smith Drive Park is officially underway! There was a lot of excitement at this week’s groundbreaking ceremony, as township officials and residents discussed the new park’s amenities.  The first phase of construction will include walking trails, green space, playgrounds, 8 pickleball courts, two basketball courts, several pavilions, and site development to support future phases of the park. Congratulations to all involved in bringing this project to fruition!

Improving Health Care

The Senate approved several measures this year to improve the delivery of health care in our communities.

Among the new laws we passed was a measure to reduce overdose deaths by incorporating real-time reporting by EMS providers into the statewide overdose mapping system, and giving EMS personnel permanent authority to leave behind a dose of naloxone at overdose scenes, placing this lifesaving medication in the hands of a caregiver or loved one.

Critical measures passed by the Senate and awaiting action in the House of Representatives include bills to strengthen Pennsylvania’s no-cost breast cancer screening law by ensuring diagnostic imaging is fully covered, and preserving prescription drug coverage for more than 10,000 seniors.

You can review other measures we passed to improve health care and address other subjects here.

New Law Streamlines Fishing Licenses for Disabled Veterans

A new law we passed earlier this year is now in effect removing the annual fishing license fee and application for veterans with 100% disability. As chair of the Game and Fisheries Committee, I was glad to co-sponsor the legislation and advance it out of committee.

Previously, only those disabled veterans with a 100% permanent disability determination from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs could receive free lifetime fishing licenses. Disabled veterans with a 100% disability determination also receive free licenses but must apply for them on an annual basis.

Act 21 of 2025 takes away the annual fee and application part of the process and allows all disabled veterans with a 100% disability determination, whether or not it is a permanent determination, to purchase free lifetime fishing licenses.

Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law

Students are heading back to class, so we all need to be on the lookout for children around school buses and bus stops.

Some reminders about Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law:

  • Motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm activated.
  • Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped.
  • Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn and all children have reached safety.

School districts are permitted to install automated camera systems on buses to enforce the law. More information about the law as well as safety tips for children are available here.

Happy Labor Day

Labor Day is a time to celebrate the men and women who built our country and made it strong, with their skill, knowledge, and ingenuity. We reflect on the importance of their contributions, the dignity of their work, and the lasting impact that it has on our communities. No matter your vocation, I hope you enter this last stretch of summer with a wonderful holiday weekend.
