Expanding Voter Registration Opportunities for Sportsmen

Legislation aimed at strengthening civic participation among Pennsylvania’s hunters and anglers is advancing in both chambers of the General Assembly with the introduction of companion legislation in the Senate.

The Sportsmen Voter Registration Act (HB 1937) was originally introduced in April 2025 by Rep. David H. Rowe. This week, I introduced companion legislation (SB 1155) in the Senate, moving the proposal forward as a bicameral effort.

The legislation would ensure that voter registration applications are made available any time a Pennsylvanian applies for a hunting or fishing license through a government agency, creating a simple, consistent opportunity for sportsmen to engage in the democratic process.

Sportsmen—hunters and anglers—are vital to Pennsylvania. They are economic drivers, conservationists, and stewards of the Commonwealth’s long-standing outdoor traditions. Yet, it is estimated that as many as 30% of Pennsylvania hunters are not registered to vote.

Applying for a hunting or fishing license may be the most consistent interaction many sportsmen have with state government.  By making voter registration applications available during that process, we can encourage greater civic participation from people who care deeply about our land, wildlife, and more.

Introducing this legislation in the Senate is an important step in advancing a common-sense proposal that expands access to voter registration without adding mandates or bureaucracy.

My time as chairman of the Senate Game & Fisheries Committee has shown me that sportsmen and women across the Commonwealth have diverse and well-informed perspectives.  This legislation ensures the significant number of hunters and anglers who have yet to register to vote have another opportunity to do so, make their voice heard, and be represented.

Carlisle Chamber Event Highlights Benefit of Working Together

This week, I was pleased to attend the Carlisle Chamber’s Elected Officials’ Reception.  It was a wonderful opportunity for community leaders, business owners, and elected officials to connect and discuss issues. The conversations were productive and focused on working together for the benefit of the region. It was a great evening! I’m thankful for the opportunity to attend and collaborate with so many good people.

Removing Ice and Snow from Vehicles

We’ve been hearing a lot about the dangers of snow and ice falling from vehicles and have seen reports of issues in our district.  It can be a chore, but removing ice or snow from your vehicle could prevent an accident or even save a life.

Tragically, Christine Lambert was killed on Christmas Day 2005 when ice from a tractor trailer crashed through her windshield. Named in her memory, “Christine’s Law,” requires drivers to remove ice or snow from vehicles, including the hood, trunk and roof, within 24 hours after a snow or ice event. Doing so will help to keep you, your passengers, and fellow travelers safe this winter season.

Here to Serve

Making state government accessible is a priority for me.  Our district offices are here to serve constituents in a number of ways:

We can help facilitate work with commonwealth agencies, including requests for birth certificates, driver’s license and motor vehicle registration renewals, completion of property tax/rent rebate applications and more.  We’re also happy to provide status updates on pending legislation and receive feedback on such.  Find our office locations and hours here. We look forward to providing assistance!

DEP Recommends Radon Testing for Homes

Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking in the U.S. To help mark Radon Action Month, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is encouraging Pennsylvanians to test their homes for radon.

DEP recommends all homes, schools, public and private buildings get tested. Radon test kits are also available at many home improvement and hardware stores, as well as from state-certified radon laboratories. Call DEP’s Radon Division at 717-783-3594, or the Radon Hotline at 800-237-2366, for help with interpreting test results and what follow-up action may be necessary. Stay safe!

Eagle Scout Recognized at the Capitol

Congratulations to Errol Huffman of Troop 171 in Mt. Holly Springs on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout!

I was glad to host Errol and his family at the Capitol this week to recognize his many accomplishments. Both Errol and his brother are exceptional scouts and impressive individuals–deeply committed to service and to their community. I appreciated the opportunity to visit with them and hear about their plans for the future.
